Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned o n. To move the leve r from t hese pos itio ns the d river m ust
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following
war ning appea rs in the instrument cluste r d isplay when t he se lect or
is in
P and N:

A t ime delay e lemen t prevents t he selecto r leve r from locking when
it is moved through the
N posit ion (going from R to D). The locking
eleme nt will lo ck t he se lect or lever if the leve r is left in N (Neutra l) for
more than approximately
l second, without the brake pedal being
pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mp h (5 km/h) the Automat ic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the se lector lever prevents the lever from being
acc identally shifted into certa in positions . Press ing th is button deac-
tivates the selector lever lock. Depending on the direction of the
shift, t he sele ctor leve r lo cks at different positions. The posit io ns a re
highlighted in the illustration ~
page 145, fig. 141.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un less the selector lever
is in the
P pa rk position . When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.

Kick - down
The kick-down features allows maximum vehicle acceler -
ation.
Applies to vehicles with a multitronic ® transmis sion
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond the res istance point,
t he t ransm ission down sh ifts into a lowe r gear ratio depend ing on the
vehicle speed and engine speed. As long as the accelerator peda l is
dep ressed, t he engine speed is automatically regulated for maximum
acceleration .
Applies to vehicles with a tiptronic t ran smi ss ion
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond the res istance point,
the au t omatic transmiss ion downshifts into a lower gear, depend ing
on vehicle speed and eng ine speed. The upshift into the nex t higher
gear takes place once the maximum spec ified engine speed is
reached .
& WARNING
Please note that the drive wheel s can spin if kick-down is used on
a smooth s lippery road - ther e is a ris k of skidding.

Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The automatic transmission is electronically cont rolled .
The transmission is self adapting and w ill automati cally select the
best shift program suited to the driving conditions and driving style.
The transmiss ion will select one of the
economy programs whe n you
drive at a steady speed or a gradua lly changing speed without heavy
accele ration . This achieves optim um fuel eff iciency, with early
upshifting and de layed downshifting. .,_
