To downshift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automatically shift into the
next gear before the engi ne reaches its max imum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when acce lerating, the automat ic trans-
mission will automatica lly shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If
you apply a heavy throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until
near maximum RPM is reached, or unti l the driver shifts into 2nd
gear .
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when dr iving down a
steep incline, the transm ission will downshift from the se lected gear
into the next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear, based on road speed
and engine RPM. Automatic downsh ifting is interrupted as soon as
you apply the throttle aga in.
(I) Tips
W hen you sh ift into the next lower gea r, the transmiss ion will
downs hift on ly when the re is no possibility of over-revving the
engine.
When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will shift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
The manual shift program is inoperative when the transmission is
in the fail-safe mode.

The shift buttons on the steering wheel allow the driver to
shift gears manually .

The shift but t ons are act ivate d when t he selecto r lever is in D, S or in
the manua l shift program.
Of course, you can continue to use the manual shift program with the
sele ctor lever on t he cente r console .

Fail-safe mode
If the automatic transmission suffers a malfunction, the
fail-safe mode maintains minimum drivability .
In the event of particular system malfunctions, the automatic trans-
mission switches to the fail-safe mode . This is signa led by all the
segments in the disp lay illuminating or going out.
You ca n continue to move t he selector lever to all positions. The
manua l shift program is switched off in the fa il-safe mode .
