Safety first Vehicle operation
The Advanced Airbag system in your veh icle has been certified to
meet th e "low-r isk" requ iremen t s fo r 3- a nd 6-year old childre n on
t he passenger side and small ad ults o n the dr iver side. The low risk
deployme nt criteria are intende d to reduce the risk of injury t hr ough
int eraction with the airbag that can occur, for example, by being too
close to the steering wheel and instr ument panel when the airbag
inflates. In addi tion, the system has bee n certified t o comp ly with the
"suppression" requirements of the Safety Sta ndard, to turn
off the
fr ont ai rbag for infan t s up to 12 mo nt hs who are rest rained on th e
front passenger seat in child restraints t hat are listed in the Stan-
dard .
Even thoug h your veh icle is eq uipped with an Advanced Airbag
system, a ll child ren, es pecially those 12 years and younger, should
always ride in the back seat pro perly restra ined for the ir age and size.
The airbag on the passenger sid e makes the fro nt seat a potentially
dange rous place fo r a child to ride. The front seat is not t he safest
place for a child in a forward-facing child safety seat. It can be a very
dange rous place for a n infant or a lar ger ch ild in a rearward-fa cing
seat. •
Advanced Airbags and the weight-sensing
mat in the front seat
The Advance d Airbag System in your vehicle detects the presence of
an infant or child in a child rest raint o n t he front passenger seat using
the weight-sens ing mat in the seat cushion and the sensor be low the
safety belt latc h o n t he fro nt passeng er seat that meas ures t he
tension on the sa fety belt.
The weigh t- sens ing mat me asures t otal we ight of t he child and t he
child saf ety seat a nd a child blanket on the front passenge r seat. The
we ight on t he front passenger seat is related to t he desi gn of the
child rest raint and it s "foot print", t he size and shape of the bot tom
of the chi ld restraint as it sits on the seat . The weight of a child
restra int a nd its "foot print" vary for diffe re nt kinds of child res t ra ints
