In a collision, t he laws of physics mean that eve n smaller items tha t
are loose in the vehicle will t urn into heavy miss iles that can cause
ser ious inju ry. It ems in the vehicl e pick up kinetic energy wh ich varies
with vehicle and t he weight of the item. The veh icle speed is the most
significa nt fac t or.
For example, in a frontal collis ion at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/ h),
t he forces acting on a 10 lbs (4. 5 kg) object are abou t
20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that the weight of the item
wou ld sudden ly be abou t 20 0 lbs (90 kg). One can easily imagine the
injuries that an item of that weight flying freely through the
passenger compartment can cause in a collision at a speed considered
re latively low .
