Checking the engine oil level

Before you check anything in the engi ne com-
partment,
always read and heed all WARN-
INGS ¢ A in Working in the engine compart-
ment on page 182.
Determining oil level
Park your vehicle so that it is horizontally
level.
While at operating state temperature,
briefly let the engine run at idle and then
shut it off .
Wait approx . two minutes.
Pull out t he o il dipstick . Wipe off the oil
dips t ick with a clean clot h, and slide it ba ck
in as fa r as it will go.
Pull it bac k out and rea d off the oil leve l

The oil leve l needs to be checked at regu lar in-
terva ls. The best t ime s t o do th is are whenev-
er you ref uel a nd prior t o long tr ips.
Depend ing on the way the vehicle is dr iven
and the ope rat ing cond it ions, oil co nsumption
ca n be up t o 1/ 2 quart per 60 0 miles (0. 5 liter
per 1,000 km) . Cons umption m ay be highe r
wit hin t he first 3,000 miles (5,000 km) .

Unscrew the cap 'l=;r: to the eng ine o il filling
hole¢

Caref ully t op off with t he ap propr iate oil in
0.5 lit er doses .
Check the oil level aga in after two minutes
¢ page 187 .
Top off the oil aga in, if necessary .
Screw the cap back on the filling hole and
slide the oil dipstick in as far as it will go.
A WARNING
- Wh ile topping off, th e oil m ust not come
in contact with hot engine parts - fi re
hazard!
- The o il filler cap mus t be properly se-
cured to preven t oil from being spr ayed
on t he hot engine an d exhaus t system
when t he engine is running - fire ha zard!
