On-Board Diagnostics
Fig. 2 6 Location of Data Link Connecto r (DLC)
On-Board Diagnostics moni tors the compo -
nent s of your emission control system. Each
monitored componen t in your eng ine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a ma l-
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the contro l
module memory.
The MIL light may a lso illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys-
tem. If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fue l filler
cap is properly closed
¢page 180.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe-
cial diagnostic equipment (gener ic scan tool
for OBD).
In order to connect the special diagnostic
eq uipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release¢

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malf unction Indi cator Lamp (MIL) li\l in
the instr ument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnost ic (OBD II) system.
The warni ng/indicator light illuminates when
t he ignition is swit ched on and goes out after
the engine sta rts and t he idle has stab ilized .
This indicates that t he MIL is working prope r-
ly.
If the light does not go out afte r the engine
is st arte d, or illuminates while you are driv-
ing, a malfunct ion may exist in t he eng ine sys-
tem. If the light illuminates, the catalytic con-
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid-
ing susta ined high speeds and/or rapid accel-
erations) and have the condition correc t ed.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler.
If t he light illuminates, the ele ctronic speed
limit er may also be malfunct ioning. For more
information ¢
page 33, Electronic speed
limiter .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory eq uipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the
maximum speed of your veh icle . To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fai lure and loss of control if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
you r vehicle also has an electronic speed limit-
er. The elect ronic speed limiter preven t s your
vehicle from going fa ster than t he tire speed
rating . For more information ¢

cle roadspeed s ignals, t he Malfunction Indica-
