DECS-150 Configuration
21 • Configuration
Before the DECS-150 is placed in service, it must be configured for the controlled equipment and
application.
Operating Mode
BESTCOMSPlus Navigation Path: Settings Explorer, Operating Settings, Operating Mode
Operating mode can be set to generator or motor. Power factor and var metering values will be opposite
in motor mode. Operating mode settings are illustrated in Figure 21-1.
Raise/Lower Configuration
In motor mode, the Raise/Lower Configuration must also be configured.
When set to Adjust Excitation, the Raise input raises the regulator output, var/pf decreases. The Lower
input lowers the regulator output, var/pf increases.
When set to Adjust Setpoint, the Raise input raises the excitation setpoint, var/pf increases. The Lower
input lowers the excitation setpoint, var/pf decreases.

Machine, Field, and Bus Ratings
BESTCOMSPlus Navigation Path: Settings Explorer, System Parameters, Rated Data
Machine and field rating settings are illustrated in Figure 21-2.
For proper excitation control and protection, the DECS-150 must be configured with the ratings of the
controlled machine and field. These ratings are typically shown on the machine nameplate or can be
obtained from the machine manufacturer. Required machine ratings include the voltage, frequency,
power factor, and apparent power (kVA). Machine current and real power (kW) are listed with the other
machine ratings as read-only settings. These values are automatically calculated from the other machine
ratings entered by the user. Required field ratings include the no-load dc voltage and current and full-load
voltage and current.
In applications where the generator will be paralleled with a bus, the DECS-150 must be configured with
the rated bus voltage.
The nominal operating power input voltage is used in metering calculations.
The ambient temperature setting determines the low-level range on the Takeover OEL settings screen.
Enabling an inverted bridge output with an exciter which does not
require an inverted bridge output will result in equipment damage.
