Checking the Engine Oil
Onlyuse highqualitydetergentoil ratedwithAPIserviceclassification
SF,SG,SH,or SJ, Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
theexpectedoperatingtemperature.Followthe chartbelow.
Althoughmulti-viscosityoils(5W20,10W30,etc.)improvestarting
in coldweather,theywill resultinincreasedoil consumptionwhen
usedabove32°ECheckyourengineoillevelmorefrequentlytoavoid
possibleenginedamagefromrunninglowonoil.

Oil Viscosity Chart
Tochecktheengineoil, proceedas follows:
Ensurethatthe tractorisona levelsurface.
Cleantheoil fillareaof anydebris.
1. Removethedipstickandwipe withacleancloth.
2. Insertandtightendipstick.
3. Removethedipstickandchecktheoil level.It shouldbeat the
Fullmarkonthe dipstick.SeeFigure9.

If low,addoil slowlyintothe engineoilfill. Donotoverfill.After
addingoil,waitoneminuteand then rechecktheoil level.
Donotoverfill.Overfillingwithoil maycausethe engineto notstart,
hardstarting,orenginesmoking.If overtheFULLmarkonthe
dipstick,drainoil toreduceoil leveltoFULLmarkondipstick.
5. Replaceandtightendipstick.
Changing Engine Oil
Theengineoil shouldbechangedinthe first5 hoursand thenevery
50 hoursoronce a season.Tochangethe engineoil,proceedas
follows:
1. WithengineOFFbutstillwarm,disconnectsparkplugwireandkeepit
awayfromsparkplug.
2. Removetheoilfillcap/dipstickfromtheoilfilltube.SeeFigure9.
3. Turnthesteeringwheelallthewaytotherighttobetterexposethedrain
plug.
4. Cliptheoildrainsleeve(packedwiththismanual)ontotheoildrainport.
Routetheoppositeendofthesleeveintoanappropriateoilcollection
containerwithacapacitygreatenoughtocollecttheusedoil.
5. Removetheoildrainplug,Theoilwillbegintodrainoutoftheengine.
6. Aftertheoilhasfinisheddraining,replacetheoildrainplugandtighten.
Becarefulnottoovertighten.
7. Removetheoildrainsleeveandstoreforlateruse.
8. Refilltheenginewithnewmotoroiluntiltheoillevelonthedipstick
readsFULL.Replacetheoilfillcap/dipstick.
Usedoil isa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeofusedoil properly.
Donotdiscardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyour localauthori-
ties oror contact1-800-4-MY-HOMEforalist of safedisposal/
recyclingfacilities.
Changing the Oil Filter
1. Draintheoil fromthe engineasdescribedabove.
2. Removetheoilfilteranddisposeof properly.See Figure10.

3. Beforeyou installthe newoil filter, lightlylubricatetheoil filter
gasketwithfresh,cleanoil.
4. Installtheoil filterbyhanduntilthe gasketcontactstheoil filter
adapter,thentightentheoilfilter 1/2to3/4 turns.
5. Addoil as describedabove.
6. Startand runthe engine.Astheenginewarmsup,checkforoil
leaks.
7. Stoptheengineandchecktheoil level.It shouldbeat theFULL
markonthe dipstick.
