Water Heater Diagnostic Procedures
Component Diagnostic Question Action Based On Status Page
Electrode (Continued)
• Inspect the electrode for visible damage
or a crack in the ceramic.
If the electrode is arcing outside of the tip of
the spark probe or there is visible damage
or cracks in the ceramic, the electrode has
shorted out. Replace the electrode.
38
Unplug the electrode from the ignitor on the
control board and cycle.
• If there is no spark, replace the control
board.
37
• If the control board does send spark,
replace the electrode.
38
Gas Solenoid Valve/Gas Valve
Does the gas solenoid valve fail to open
when there is a spark?
Perform all checks to determine if the gas
solenoid valve is defective. If so, replace the
gas solenoid valve.
• Confirm voltage to the gas solenoid valve
is a minimum of 10.5 VDC.
• Confirm the resistance on the gas
solenoid valve is between 15–25 Ohms.
35
Does the gas solenoid valve fail to open
and there is no spark?
Confirm that the 2 A fuse on the control board
is not blown.
49
Unplug the electrode from the ignitor on the
control board and cycle.
• If there is no spark, replace the control
board.
37
• If the control board does send spark,
replace the electrode.
38
Does the gas solenoid valve open and
there is a spark, but there is no ignition?
Perform all checks to determine if the gas
solenoid valve is defective. If so, replace the
gas solenoid valve.
• Confirm voltage to the gas solenoid valve
is a minimum of 10.5 VDC.
• Confirm the resistance on the gas
solenoid valve is between 15–25 Ohms.
35
Does the burner fail to ignite, have an
erratic burner flame, or is sooting?
Check the flue tube for blockages. Remove
the blockages if found.
49
Perform all checks to determine if the gas
solenoid valve is defective. If so, replace the
gas solenoid valve.
• Confirm voltage to the gas solenoid valve
is a minimum of 10.5 VDC.
• Confirm the resistance on the gas
solenoid valve is between 15–25 Ohms.
• Confirm there is 10 in. W.C. gas pressure
at the valve.
35
Gas Only - Pilot Models: does the pilot
light, but fail to stay lit?
The gas valve is not functioning because of a
tripped E.C.O.
22
Gas Only - Pilot Models: does the pilot
fail to light?
Perform all checks to determine if the gas
valve is defective. If so, replace the gas valve.
35
Gas Only - Pilot Models: does the main
burner have an erratic flame or fail to
light?
Check the main burner orifice for blockages.
Remove the blockages if found.
