Diagnostic Procedures Water Heater
Component Diagnostic Question Action Based On Status Page
Relay (Gas/Electric Combination Model)
Standard Relay
Does the gas/electric combination
model operate using gas but does not
operate on electric power?
Perform the following checks:
Determine if power is going out to the relay
from the control board on the yellow wire.
Check for continuity from the AC power in to
the AC power out on the relay.
Make sure you have at least 10.5 VDC from the
yellow wire on the board through to where
it plugs into the relay. Make sure you have a
good ground from the relay to the grounding
screw.
If there is no continuity or the voltage is not to
specification, the relay is defective. Replace
the relay.

Zettler Relay
Tank
Is the Water Heater leaking or is there a
leak coming from the Water Heater tank?
Check to see if the Water Heater is leaking
water. If so, confirm the Water Heater is
leaking from the tank and not from the
plumbing, fittings, or P/T relief valve. If it is,
replace the tank or the Water Heater.
A tank leak that is not a pinhole or small
leak at a weld is not a warrantable item. This
indicates that the unit was not winterized or
not winterized properly.
N/A
Thermal Cut-Off
Does the gas solenoid valve fail to open
and no spark is present?
Is the gas/electric combination model
not operating while using either gas or
electric power?
Inspect the thermal cut-off for visible damage.
Determine it the plastic sheathing has heat
damage or if it is melted. If there is damage,
replace the thermal cut-off.
I
Replacement of the thermal cut-off due
to heat damage is not covered under
warranty.
34
Check for continuity. 33
If there is no continuity, the thermal cut-off is
defective. Replace the thermal cut-off.
34
Thermocouple (Gas Only - Pilot Model Only)
Does the pilot light, but fail to stay lit? The thermocouple may be weak or the gas
valve is defective due to a tripped E.C.O.
Perform the following checks:
Test the thermocouple port on the gas valve. 47
Perform a DC millivolts test on the
thermocouple when in flame for at least 30
seconds. The reading should fall between
16–21 DC millivolts.
47
If the thermocouple proves defective, replace
the thermocouple.
