Service Procedures Water Heater
3. Attach the leads of the multi-meter, one to each end
of the thermal cut-off.
4. The reading should confirm continuity/closed
circuit.

Consult the operating manual for your multi-meter
for specific device function.
If the reading shows no continuity/open circuit, it
indicates a faulty thermal cut-off.

Place the thermal cut-out back in the factory default
position aer service. All 6-gallon and 6-gallon EXT
model Water Heaters bend at a 90° angle to the
le. All 10-gallon and 16-gallon EXT model Water
Heaters bend at a 90° angle to the right.

and EXT) Models Only
27 Replacing a Thermal Cut-Off
1. Perform the steps in “Shutting Down the Water
Heater” on page 32.
2. Note the orientation of the thermal cut-off.
3. Unplug the thermal cut-off from the thermostat.
4. Disconnect the brown wire.
5. Reverse steps 3–4 to install the new thermal cut-off
using the orientation noted in step 2.
