Water Heater Service Procedures
57 Performing a Reed Switch Continuity Test with a Magnet
I
You can also place a magnet at the top of the reed
switch and then check for continuity. You should
have continuity when the magnet is placed in this
location.
8.31 Performing a Thermocouple
Circuit Test
I
Gas Only - Pilot Model Only
58 Performing a Thermocouple Circuit Test
1. Perform the steps in “Shutting Down the Water
Heater” on page 32.
2. Remove the thermocouple line from the bottom of
the gas valve.
3. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.
4. Attach one lead of the multi-meter into the center of
the thermocouple port.
I
Be sure to center the lead to the thermocouple
port. Touching the sides will create a false reading.
5. Attach the other lead of the multi-meter to the body
of the gas valve. You should have continuity.
I
Consult the operating manual for your multi-meter
for specific device function.
If the reading shows no continuity/open circuit, it
indicates a faulty gas valve.
8.32 Testing the Thermocouple
I
Gas Only - Pilot Models Only
59 Testing the Thermocouple
1. Perform the steps in “Replacing the Thermocouple
on page 48 to remove the thermocouple from the
gas valve.
2. Set the multi-meter to the DC mV setting.
3. Connect the negative lead from the multi-meter to
the center of the thermocouple line.
4. Using a grill lighter, heat the thermocouple end for at
least 30 seconds, then remove the heat.
5. Connect the positive lead from the multi-meter to the
center of the thermocouple connector. The reading
should be between 16–21 mV DC.
If the reading is outside of that range, the
thermocouple is faulty.
