8.2 Shutting Down the Water Heater

Dual Red Wire

Perform these steps before performing any service
on the Water Heater.
1. Place the control switch in the Off position.
2. Turn off the gas supply.
3. Disconnect the dual red wire by pulling it from the
le-hand terminal of the E.C.O. switch.
4. To turn the Water Heater On, reverse steps 1–3.
8.3 Performing a Gas Leak Test
WARNING: FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION
HAZARD.
Do not use matches, candles, or other sources of
open flame when checking for gas leaks. Failure to
obey this warning could result in death or serious
injury.
1. Turn on the gas.
2. Locate the component for testing. See “Component
Locations” on page 11.
3. Place a non-corrosive leak detection fluid into a spray
bottle.
4. Lightly spray the component with the fluid.
5. Look for bubbles forming on the component.
The appearance of bubbles indicates a leak in the
component.
8.4 Performing a Thermostat or
E.C.O. Continuity Test

Gas Only or Gas/Electric Combination (Standard
and EXT) Models
24 Performing a Thermostat or E.C.O. Continuity Test
1. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.
2. Disconnect the wires from the thermostat or E.C.O.
being tested.
3. Attach the leads of the multi-meter to the terminals of
the thermostat or E.C.O. being tested.
