Diagnostic Procedures Water Heater
Component Diagnostic Question Action Based On Status Page
Heating Element (Gas/Electric Combination models)
Screw-in Heating Element
Bolt-in Heating Element
Does the gas/electric combination
model operate using gas but does not
operate on electric power?
Perform the following checks:
Check the voltage. If the heating element has
110 VAC but is not getting hot, replace the
heating element.
37
Perform an Ohms test on the heating element. 36
If the reading is not between 9–11 Ohms,
replace the heating element.
I
When replacing the heating element,
confirm whether you need the bolt-
on or screw-in type. They are not
interchangeable.

Mixing Valve (EXT Models)
EXT Models: Is the water is too hot or too
cold?
If you experience low flow from the hot-water
faucet or notice the water is not as hot coming
from the Water Heater, the mixing valve may
be faulty. Perform the following checks:
Low flow or cold water from the EXT Water
Heater models is a result of corrosion on the
seats and/or debris blocking the inlet screen
(if equipped) of the mixing valve. Remove the
mixing valve and make sure the mixing valve
screen is clear of debris.
48
Verify the water temperature at the tank is hot
enough. The EXT thermostat is set to start a
heating cycle at approximately 135°F (57°C)
and will shut off at approximately 155°F
(68°C) with a goal of approximately 130°F
(54°C) at the faucet.
26
If the checks verify the mixing valve is
defective, replace the mixing valve.
42
Modulating Valve (On Demand Models)
When the water is running, does the
appliance fail to attempt ignition and the
fan fail to run?
Check for continuity at the two white wires
coming from the reed switch. Make sure the
water flow is at least 0.8 gpm (3.0 lpm) during
the test.
46
If there is no continuity, the modulating valve is
defective. Replace the modulating valve.
45
Perform all checks to determine if the
modulating valve is defective. If so, replace
the modulating valve.
45
Is the water temperature at the faucet too
hot, too cold, or inconsistent?
Check for continuity at the two white wires
coming from the reed switch. Make sure the
water flow is at least 0.8 gpm (3.0 lpm) during
the test.
