8.8 Performing an Ohms Test on the
Gas Solenoid Valve Coils

Gas Only or Gas/Electric Combination (Standard
and EXT) Models Only
30 Testing the Gas Solenoid Valve Coils
1. Perform the steps in “Replacing the Gas Solenoid
Valve” on page 35 to remove the gas solenoid
valve.
2. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.
3. Disconnect the wires from each solenoid coil.
4. Attach the leads to the terminals of one coil. The
reading should be between 15–25 Ohms.
5. Repeat step 4 for the second solenoid coil.

Consult the operating manual for your multi-meter
for specific device function.
If the readings fall outside of the specification, it
indicates a faulty solenoid coil.

1. Perform the steps in “Shutting Down the Water
Heater” on page 32.
2. Remove the incoming gas supply line.
3. Remove the screws that attach the existing gas
solenoid valve to the bracket.
4. Slide out the exiting gas solenoid valve.
5. Reverse steps 1–4 to install the new gas solenoid
valve.
