8.18 Replacing the P/T Valve

and EXT) Models Only
39 Replacing the PT Valve
1. Perform the steps in “Shutting Down the Water
Heater” on page 32.
2. Let the water in the Water Heater cool or let the
water run until it is cool.
3. Turn off the incoming water supply.
4. Turn off the main water supply (the pump or water
hook up source).
5. Open the hot-water faucet closest to the Water
Heater to release built-up pressure.
6. Unscrew the P/T relief valve from the Water Heater.
7. Reverse steps 1–6 to install the new P/T relief valve.

When replacing the P/T valve, make sure the water
discharge opening on the valve is in the same
position as before service.
8. Perform the steps in “Re-establishing the Thermal
Expansion Air Pocket” on page 39.
