Speed Limitation
Two main factors define speed limitation:
The substrate type
It defines the time of the laser beam activation to perform a correct mark.
The message to mark
The number of characters and the character size of the message.
The most critical parameter is the combination of pitch* and speed. Because the beam
draws characters and follows the product movement, it has to be back to its original position
when the next product arrives. The time to track the product depends on the speed of the
target product. The faster the product moves, the longer is the tracking and longer must be
the pitch.
* pitch: distance from the beginning of the mark to the beginning of the next one.
Substrate Influence
The maximum line speed is very dependent upon the nature of material.
If the material is difficult to mark then you need to leave the laser on longer to create a
correct mark. Then in this case the speed coding capability of the laser is reduced because
the material needs a higher energy density to be correctly coded.
Mark speed adjustment
The energy density is given by the lens used and the laser used as well. But the scanning
speed to mark is given by the Mark Speed. Slower is the mark speed, higher is the mark
quality!
It is strongly recommended to get the correct mark speed for the application with
doing samples on customer’s substrate.
Speed Capabilities
The speed capabilities depend on a combination of several parameters:
The target substrate that defines the time for the laser beam to be activated to
perform a satisfying mark
The laser coder configuration: power, galvo head performance, optical lens, marking
field size
The message content: number and size of characters, font
