Battery disposal instructions
Although batteries contain lead and small amounts of antimony and arsenic, they
are safe if handled according to the accompanying guide. The battery cells must
not be dismantled as this involves several hazards, which are best handled under
controlled conditions, using specialised equipment. No attempt should be made to
repair any batteries; they should be treated as disposable when they have outlived
their use. Batteries must be disposed of in accordance with current waste disposal
and pollution legislation and in particular; The Environment Protection Act 1990,
Special Waste Regulation 1996. It is recommended that the following authorities are
contacted before any attempt is made to dispose of batteries; Environment Agency
Local office, Local Authority Environmental Health or Waste Handling department.
