Revision 1.2
6.1.2 Performing a Firmware Upgrade through the Card Edge Serial Port
A firmware upgrade can also be performed through the card edge serial port. This takes much longer
than through Ethernet, and will require access to the front of the card by opening the frame door. The
card will also be non-responsive for the duration of the upgrade. See section 3.3.1 for instructions on
connecting the card edge serial port to a PC. Once the terminal program is connected, press ENTER
to get to the “CLI> Command Line Interface prompt. The current software version can be displayed by
typingverand pressing ENTER.
There is a 3-pin Run/Upgrade header (J13) about 1.5 inches behind the LED display. Make sure the
shunt is placed in the UPGRADE position (on pins 2-3, toward the rear of the card).
Type in the command “reset” and press ENTER. The tally router will reboot. Immediately press
CTRL+X several times to stop the unit from booting again. This should break into the “PPCBOOT>
prompt. Type the command “upgrade” and press ENTER. You should see the message “upload
product firmware now”. The firmware can now be sent to the tally router using the XMODEM
protocol (checksum mode). This should take about 4 minutes to complete.
When the firmware is finished sending, you should see the message “upload okay”. At this point
enter the command “boot” and press ENTER. The tally router will boot using the newly upgraded
firmware.
Move the shunt on the Run/Upgrade header (J13) back to the RUN position (pins 1-2).
