Overview

The Evinrude ICON Concealed Side Mount Remote Control is a sophisticated electronic shift and throttle system designed for single-engine installations, offering precise control and advanced features for outboard operation. This user's guide provides comprehensive information on its functions, usage, and maintenance, ensuring safe and efficient boating.

Function Description

The ICON remote control serves as the primary interface for managing your outboard engine. It integrates shift and throttle functions into a single lever, allowing for intuitive control of your boat's speed and direction. The system is designed to work with Evinrude outboards and communicates via the ICON control network.

Key components include:

  • Control Lever: This is the central element for shifting between FORWARD, NEUTRAL, and REVERSE gears, and for controlling the engine's throttle.
  • Switch Panel: Located at the operator station, this panel houses several important switches:
    • START/STOP Switch: Used to start and stop the engine.
    • NEUTRAL Throttle Switch (N): Disengages the shift function, allowing for throttle-only operation, useful for warm-up or specific maneuvers.
    • RPM Switch: Enables fine adjustments to engine speed.
  • Master Power/Key Switch: Powers the ICON control network, the outboard, the NMEA 2000/gauge network, and boat accessories (when an Accessory Power Relay Kit is installed).
  • Master Trim Switch: Located on the control lever, this switch adjusts the trim setting of the outboard.
  • NEUTRAL Indicator LED: Illuminates when the control lever is in the NEUTRAL position, and flashes during NEUTRAL throttle operation.
  • ICON Gateway Module: Provides network data to the NMEA 2000 network and I-Command gauges, and monitors fuel levels for up to four tanks.
  • ICON Network Hubs: Connect buss cables to various network devices, including remote controls, the gateway module, and the master power/key switch.
  • Electronic Servo Module (ESM) and Engine Management Module (EMM): These modules are crucial for engine identity and control, ensuring the ICON network correctly manages the outboards.

Usage Features

The ICON remote control offers a range of features designed to enhance the boating experience:

  • Shift and Throttle Control: The single control lever provides smooth and precise control. Moving the lever forward engages FORWARD gear and increases speed, while moving it aft engages REVERSE gear and increases speed in reverse. The system incorporates a delay for gear changes until engine speeds are below 1500 RPM, protecting the engine.
  • NEUTRAL Throttle Operation: By pressing the NEUTRAL throttle switch (N), you can operate the throttle without engaging a gear. This is particularly useful for warming up the engine or for specific procedures like long-term storage (winterization), where engine speed can be adjusted between 1200 and 2600 RPM. To deactivate NEUTRAL throttle, return the control lever to NEUTRAL and press the N switch again.
  • RPM Adjustment: The RPM switch allows for gradual adjustments to engine RPM. Each press of the + or - side changes the throttle setting by 1%, resulting in approximately 100 to 200 RPM adjustment, depending on engine speed. This feature is active only when the control lever is in FORWARD gear and engine speed is above 500 RPM.
  • Trim and Tilt Control: The master trim switch on the control lever enables convenient adjustment of the outboard's trim and tilt, allowing you to optimize performance and maneuverability.
  • Emergency Stop Lanyard: A critical safety feature, the emergency stop lanyard, when attached to the operator and the master power/key switch, will stop all engines if the operator moves beyond the lanyard's range. Regular testing of this system is essential.
  • Station Select (for multi-station installations): This process activates a remote control station during system power-up. In single-station installations, the remote control activates automatically.
  • Station Protect: An optional security feature, primarily for dual-station applications, that requires a unique key sequence to be entered to activate a station and start/run outboards. This feature must be enabled by a dealer using Evinrude Diagnostics software.
  • Indicator LED Brightness and Gauge Backlighting Adjustment: The RPM switch can also be used to adjust the brightness of indicator LEDs on the control base and the backlighting of NMEA 2000/I-Command gauges. This adjustment is performed when the control lever is in the NEUTRAL position.

Maintenance Features

While the ICON system is largely maintenance-free in terms of periodic calibration, certain services and checks are important:

  • System Calibration: The electronic shift and throttle system does not require periodic calibration under normal use. However, calibration is mandatory after specific services, such as replacing the throttle or shift actuator, Electronic Servo Module (ESM), Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), or after shift linkage, powerhead, or gearcase removal/installation. This calibration must be performed by an authorized Evinrude dealer using Evinrude Diagnostics software (version 4.0 or higher).
  • Control Lever Friction Adjustment: The control lever friction can be adjusted to prevent unwanted throttle changes due to vibration. This involves removing a cover from the control lever and using a hex tool to turn an adjustment screw. Turning clockwise increases friction, while counterclockwise reduces it.
  • Engine Identity Numbers: The system automatically checks engine identity numbers upon initial power-up. It's crucial not to exchange ESMs or EMMs between outboards, as this can lead to severe engine damage.
  • Troubleshooting: The user's guide provides a troubleshooting section to address common issues, such as the system not powering up, fault messages, or issues with engine shutdown or trim/tilt. It outlines possible causes and recommended procedures, often directing users to check fuses, connections, battery conditions, or to consult an authorized dealer for software updates or repairs.
  • Fault Messages: The system displays specific fault messages on I-Command gauges, such as "RPM reduction, ICON fault 107, see dealer" (Communication Error) or "ICON fault 152, see user guide" (Shift Actuator Motion Fault). Each message is accompanied by a procedure to address the issue, which may involve resetting the system, checking linkages, or seeking dealer assistance.

The Evinrude ICON Concealed Side Mount Remote Control is designed for reliability and ease of use, providing a seamless and controlled boating experience with its advanced electronic features.
