As the system scans in azimuth, the azimuth indicator (Az) will show the
pointing direction of the SGA relative to line of travel of the host. The
width of the beam emanating from the Az symbol represents the field of
view of the active camera.
The El indicator graphically shows the SGA orientation (Ball up or Ball
down) and elevation angle.
3.12.1 IR Level
IR Level is similar to brightness on a video monitor or television set.
Adjusting the Level control makes the picture lighter or darker.
3.12.1.1 Auto Level
Auto Level adjusts the level of the IR camera automatically and is the
preferred setting. When the LEVEL adjust is set to auto-level, the
camera automatically adjusts the level setting to provide an image which
covers the range of temperatures in the scene. This setting is preferred
for operation where the camera will scan a variety of scene backgrounds
(scanning a maritime scene where some of the scan is over water and
some over land). The LEVEL adjustment will change dynamically as the
scene conditions change.
3.12.1.2 Manual Level

The Level is a manual control that allows the operator to manually
adjust the IR camera level as needed. The Level can be adjusted
up or down to darken or lighten the image displayed. This control
moves the span of temperatures determined by the gain
adjustment along IR camera’s overall temperature range. When
in manual Level mode the Level symbol appears in the left middle
of the display monitor. If the Level setting is set too high, the
camera image will appear completely black (all temperatures
below the range of the camera’s sensitivity). Similarly, if the Level
is set too low, the camera image will appear completely white (all
temperatures above the range of the camera’s sensitivity). Note
that in both cases the camera is assumed to be in the White hot
polarity setting. The user must watch the image to determine
when the Level control is set properly for the scene.
3.12.2 IR Gain
Gain is similar to contrast on a video monitor or television set. Adjusting
the Gain control changes the dynamic range of the IR camera to
