How to resolve CAN bus network problems on Garmin G5?

Maria BryantSep 13, 2025
To resolve issues within the CAN bus network of your Garmin G5, ensure the CAN bus is daisy-chained between CAN devices around the system and that it is terminated in only two locations. Verify the resistance between the CAN-H and CAN-L pins on the connector is 60 ohms. Check that the CAN-H and CAN-L signals are not swapped, shorted together, or open-circuited at any LRU connector, and that they are not shorted to ground. On the Device Information page, highlight each device and ensure the Network Error Rate is a steady 0%. Power up the #1 G5 unit and one other CAN device at a time to verify the connection quality.

If you encounter a stuck or sticking microSD card in your Garmin G5, first try another card, preferably one without a label, to confirm the problem. If the issue persists, the microSD socket board inside the unit may be misaligned with the overlay, and the G5 will require repair.

Check for loose wire terminals on the circuit breaker connections of the power wire(s), which can cause intermittent power connections, and inspect for intermittent circuit breakers. Ensure all connectors are fully seated and that the jack screw connectors are fully tightened. Also, check for loose wire harnesses, secure mounting of the G5, and any heavy objects not tightly fastened to the aircraft structure. Look for water or fluid contamination around the G5 and inspect the connector for bent pins. Finally, verify that the wire harness clamp on the rear ...
