11 Mirroring
Port mirroring is a feature used as a monitoring strategy in packet switching
networks. When enabled, port mirroring creates a copy of the incoming and outgoing
data from a specific port to another port. The port which receives the copied traffic
could thus be connected to a network analyser, which would be used for analysis
and debugging data or network error diagnostics. Figure below shows a switch doing
port mirroring as an example.
Figure 61: Port Mirroring Being Executed by a Switch
Reason Switches have port-mirroring function capabilities, which can be basically
executed in two ways:
Port mirroring in the same switch;
Port mirroring in different switches.
Port mirroring in the same switch, as it says itself, is executed in just one switch that
shall be configured to Mirror type. Mirrored port and port used to output mirrored
data are in the same equipment.
In Mirror type mode of operation, Reason Switches can mirror all traffic, just incoming
data (Rx) or just outgoing data (Tx) in a chosen port. Besides, it is possible to choose
more than one port to be mirrored, but only one port will output the traffic mirrored.
Figure below exemplifies the mirroring option at the same switch.
