Generator Tests Under Load
Off-Grid Mode DISABLED
Proceed as follows to test unit with electrical loads
applied when unit is equipped with a transfer switch and
with off-grid mode DISABLED:
1. Verify generator is in OFF mode. Set generator
MLCB (generator disconnect) to OFF (OPEN).
2. Turn off all circuit breakers/electrical loads to be
supplied by generator.
3. Turn off utility power supply to transfer switch,
using the means provided (such as a utility MLCB).
4. Manually set transfer switch to STANDBY, with
load terminals connected to generator E1/E2 termi-
nals. Transfer switch operating lever should be
down.
5. Push generator MANUAL button. Engine will crank
and start immediately.
6. Verify fuel pressure while cranking. Record crank-
ing fuel pressure:________
7. Allow engine to stabilize and warm up for a few
minutes.
8. Verify fuel pressure while running. Record running
fuel pressure:________
9. Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON
(CLOSED). Loads are now powered by standby
generator.
10. Turn on circuit breakers/electrical loads to be sup-
plied by generator one by one.
11. Connect a calibrated AC voltmeter and a frequency
meter across terminal lugs E1 and E2. Voltage
should be approximately 240 volts and frequency
should be approximately 60 Hz. If voltage and fre-
quency are rapidly dropping as loads are applied,
generator may be overloading, or there may be a
fuel issue. Verify output current measurement of
loads and/or fuel pressure.
12. Allow generator to run at full rated load for 20–30
minutes. Listen for unusual noises, vibration, or
other indications of abnormal operation. Inspect for
oil leaks, evidence of overheating, etc.
13. Verify fuel pressure while under full load. Record
loaded fuel pressure: ______________.
14. Turn off electrical loads when testing under load is
complete.
15. Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to
OFF (OPEN).
16. Allow engine to run at no-load for 2–5 minutes.
17. Press generator OFF button. Engine will shut
down.
Off-Grid Mode ENABLED
Proceed as follows to test unit with electrical loads
applied when unit is configured to run without a transfer
switch and with off-grid mode ENABLED:
1. Verify generator is in OFF mode. Set generator
MLCB (generator disconnect) to OFF (OPEN).
2. Turn off all circuit breakers/electrical loads to be
supplied by generator.
3. Press MANUAL button on generator panel. Engine
will crank and start.
4. Verify fuel pressure while cranking. Record crank-
ing fuel pressure:_____________.
5. Allow engine to stabilize and warm up for a few
minutes.
6. Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON
(CLOSED). Loads are now powered by standby
generator.
7. Turn on circuit breakers and electrical loads to be
supplied by generator one by one.
8. Connect a calibrated AC voltmeter and a frequency
meter across terminal lugs E1 and E2. Voltage
should be approximately 240 volts and frequency
should be approximately 60 Hz. If voltage and fre-
quency are rapidly dropping as loads are applied,
generator may be overloading, or there may be a
fuel issue. Verify output current measurement of
loads and/or fuel pressure.
9. Allow generator to run at full rated load for 20–30
minutes. Listen for unusual noises, vibration, or
other indications of abnormal operation. Inspect for
oil leaks, evidence of overheating, etc.
10. Verify fuel pressure while under full load. Record
loaded fuel pressure: ______________.
11. Turn off electrical loads when testing under load is
complete.
12. Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to
OFF (OPEN).
13. Allow engine run at no-load for 2–5 minutes.
14. Press generator OFF button. Engine will shut
down.
NOTE: If fuel pressure under full load is below minimum
operating pressure guideline, generator may not function
correctly. Fuel pressure gauge needle should also remain
steady while testing. A fluctuating fuel pressure gauge
needle indicates gas piping may be undersized or
restricted. It may also indicate a step-down gas regulator
is too small, or too close to the unit.
(000132)
Electrocution. Do not manually transfer under load.
Disconnect transfer switch from all power sources
prior to manual transfer. Failure to do so will result in
death or serious injury, and equipment damage.
