Main Menu 2
The main menu 2 allows access to 3 other menus. The button
below the arrow calls main menu 1.
Modulation menu (types of modulation)
The HM 8131-2 features the modulation types: AM (amplitude
modulation), FSK (frequency shift keying) and PSK (Phase shift
keying). They can be selected in the main menu 2 at “Mod“.
Amplitude modulation
First AM has to be chosen, then the modulation depth from 0 to
100 % which can be done in 1 % steps. Either internal or external
modulation is possible. The modulation depth can be set by the
menu buttons
, the knob or the keyboard . If the key-
board is used the value keyed in will be stored by pressing the
button (MHz/%). The AM function will be activated by pressing

modulation. An arrow in front of the modulation type selected
will indicate which was activated. The function activated will be
deactivated by pressing the same button again.
Internal modulation source
The internal source generates a 1 kHz 1.0 V
rms
signal. The
modulation depth selected will determine the shape of the
output signal.
The picture shows: internal source, Vo = 10 V
pp
, f = 20 kHz,
100 % modulation, scope 5 V/cm.
The maximum selectable output voltage in AM
mode is 10.00 V
pp
. In case a larger value is entered
into the keyboard a warning signal will sound, the
former value remains valid. It is not possible to en-
ter illegal values via the knob or the menu buttons
. With 100 % modulation and 10.00 V

the total output signal will be 20 V

.
External source
An external modulation voltage can be connected to the rear
panel terminal AM IN
. The waveform can be any. However,
the indication of the modulation depth will be only correct for a
