The Hanwell MS1000 Control System is an interface designed to connect a Hanwell Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) with third-party control equipment. Its primary function is to generate latched voltages or currents that correspond to measured values from remote sensors, making these signals compatible with the Hanwell EMS software. This system allows for the integration of radio sensors into various control applications, effectively replacing wired sensors where a third-party Building Management System (BMS) can accept analogue signals directly.
Typical applications for the MS1000 Control System include interfacing radio sensors to a BMS, managing conservation heating systems, providing bespoke heating control, and supplying signals to alarm panels. The system is versatile, capable of allowing radio sensors to directly replace wired-in sensors in building environmental control applications, triggering relay outputs for alarm or control functions (such as motorised valves), and offering a combination of all output types within a single MS1000 system.
The MS1000 Control System can be configured in two main ways:
- Standalone Solution: In this configuration, radio sensors transmit data directly to the MS1000 Control Unit. This can be achieved either through a standalone receiver connected to the MS1000 or via a receiver integrated into the MS1000 Control Unit itself. The control outputs from the MS1000 are then sent to a third-party BMS.
- Monitoring and Control Solution: Here, radio sensors transmit data to an SR2 or CR2 Controller/Processor/Base Station (Controller). The Controller then sends this data to both a monitoring PC and the MS1000 Control Unit. The MS1000 Control Outputs are subsequently sent to a third-party BMS. In this setup, the Controller can be enclosed within the MS1000 Control Unit or mounted separately.
The system incorporates various controllers and processors. The CR3 Hanwell Controller receives and processes data signals from Hanwell radio and wired sensors, and is designed for continuous monitoring of an entire system. It stores received data and transfers it to a PC for detailed interpretation and permanent storage. It also includes built-in alarm conditions indicated by front panel LEDs and can be fitted with an optional GSM modem for remote communications. The SR2 Hanwell Smart Receiver/Controller is a network-enabled receiver designed for continuously monitoring environmental data from multiple points. It can handle data from up to 253 sensors, with up to 16 SR2s supporting up to 4048 sensors in a single system. The SR2 logs all received data in its 512kb on-board memory and is continually interrogated by software to download recent and historic data. It also features alarm relays to indicate out-of-specification readings or network failures, and an MS BUS connection to drive the Hanwell MS1000 Control System.
Output signals from the MS1000 Control System are generated by Output Cards located within the MS1000 Control Unit. These cards are snap-mounted onto a DIN rail inside the MS1000 wall-mounted case. Each standard MS1000 case can accommodate up to 8 Output Cards. For larger systems, a larger MS1000 Control Unit or multiple connected Control Units can provide additional outputs. Two types of Output Cards are available:
- MS1000-RM (8-bit) – Relay Output Card: Provides 4 relay outputs capable of switching either 0.5A at 12V DC or 0.5A at 24V AC. Higher power relays can be driven from the card if needed. Normally open or normally closed options are available.
- MS1000-AM (12-bit) – Analogue Output Card: Provides 4 analogue outputs, configurable as either a voltage between 2V and 10V (1mA) or a current between 0 and 20mA (compliance = 12V). GND is internally connected to PE. Fault conditions are indicated by a permanent drop to zero, and a low battery condition by a brief drop to zero. Analogue cards are available with 8 or 12-bit resolution.
Each MS1000 Output Card requires a unique ID number, which is set at the factory using 8 DIP switches in a binary fashion.
Technical Specifications:
- Power Supply: The MS1000 Control Unit is powered from a single-phase 240V 50Hz local mains supply, connected via a DIN rail mounted power supply, fused at 3 Amps. Internal +12V is generated for Output Cards and the Control Board. The internal 0V reference is connected to local PE (Protective Earth). Wiring for power supply should be rated above 13A.
- Controller to MS1000 Control Unit Connection:
- USB Cable Wiring: The CR3/SR2 Controller communicates with the monitoring PC via a USB cable.
- RS485 Wiring: Required for Standalone MS1000 systems (direct connection to Output Cards) and Monitoring and Control systems (connection to CR3/SR2 Controller). The Hanwell supplied cable consists of a 2-metre 4-core cable with a moulded mini-DIN plug and a free end. Customer-supplied bus cable should be run from the MS1000 Control Unit's case to a Junction Box adjacent to the CR2/SR2 Controller. The cable should be Brand Rex HF57502 or UL Style 2464 equivalent (e.g., RS Stock No. 362-184), or Cat5e networking cable. It should have halogen-free Polyolefin flame retardant sheathing, 2 twisted pairs with overall screen and drain, 7/0.2mm (24AWG) stranded tinned copper conductors. The operational temperature range for the cable is -25 to +75°C. Up to 1000m of cable can be used without line drivers.

Usage Features:
- Pre-Delivery: Hanwell Solutions requires a User Requirement Specification (URS) detailing output requirements for the system, which will be programmed into the MS1000 Firmware. This includes control strategy, number of channels, equipment to be controlled, and type of output required.
- Firmware/Software Requirements: The firmware is a customised ROM fitted to either the MS1000 Control Board or the CR3/SR2 Controller, based on the URS. The EMS application software is used for commissioning and monitoring. New systems come with the most recent software. Standalone systems can be commissioned via a laptop connected to the RS232 Serial lead (a Serial/USB adapter may be needed). Monitoring and Control systems require a PC with a Serial Port running Windows 95 or later, with full access rights for networked installations.
- Pre-Commissioning: Before on-site commissioning by a Hanwell Solutions Technician, the customer's electrical contractors must prepare the site. This includes mounting MS1000 Control Unit cases, mounting Output Cards on DIN rails, running mains power (but not connecting it), running customer-supplied bus cables (for Monitoring and Control systems), and running and clearly labelling all necessary control cables from the BMS/plant to the MS1000 Control Unit. A mains socket and PC must be available at the CR2/SR2 Controller's location.
Maintenance Features:
- System Fault Checking:
- Signals not received on any channels: Possible causes include mains power failure/surge (requiring a reset of MS1000 and 3rd party systems by switching the CR-1 On/Off), disconnected links between MS1000 and 3rd party system (check connections), or no signals being received by the MS1000 (check for "signal from #" message on CR-1 LCD, check sensor battery, aerial connection, and reset MS1000).
- Signals not received on some channels: Possible causes include incorrect or loose wiring (check wiring on faulty sensors), low batteries (check battery voltage on faulty sensors), 3rd party system data filters excluding real data (check filter settings), or a locked Hanwell Repeater (reset by disconnecting/reconnecting power).
- Readings are incorrect: Possible causes include incorrect wiring (check wiring on faulty sensors) or incorrect scaling on the 3rd party system's software (ensure scaling matches what was specified when the MS1000 was ordered).
- Existing Hanwell EMS Users: For existing users, the EMS Architect2 Controller has four mini-DIN sockets (RX, RX2, MS, and SERIAL). Architect2 Controller Control Units with two sockets (RX and SERIAL) should be upgraded. The EMS Architect2 Controller requires a custom firmware ROM based on a URS. Software updates are available; users can check the current software version via the "Help" menu and "About" option. Wiring for existing systems will run from the Architect2.
The MS1000 Control System is a robust and flexible solution for integrating environmental monitoring with control applications, designed for reliability and ease of integration into existing infrastructure.
