4.6 Chlorine Testing
Useahometestkitoraskyourpoolprofessionaltotestyourwater.Itisrecommendedthatchlorinetestsamplesbe
taken from two (2) places, described below. Compare the two (2) samples. A higher level should be found at the pool
return line. The higher level at the pool return line indicates the salt water chlorinator system is producing chlorine.

4.7 Salt (NaCl Sodium Chloride)
4.7.1 When to Add Salt
Add salt to the pool if the salt is too low (see Table 1) or if salt indicator light turns on. For a new pool or newly
resurfaced pool it is recommended to wait at least 30 days (surface should be completely cured) before adding salt.
Followthepoolsurfacemanufacturer’sguidelinesforyourparticularpool.Forvinylandberglasspools,saltcanbe
added at start up.
4.7.2 What Type of Salt to Use
• Thepurerthesalt,thebetterthelifeandperformanceoftheelectrolyticcell.Useasaltthatisatleast99.8%pure
NaCl.Thesaltisanevaporated,granulated,foodquality,non-iodizedsalt.Consultyoursaltsupplier.
• Avoidusingsaltwithanti-cakingagents(sodiumferrocyanide,alsoknownasYPSoryellowprussiateofsoda)that
couldcausesomediscolorationofttingsandsurfacenishesinpool.
• Waterconditioningsaltpelletsarecompressedformsofevaporatedsaltandmaybeusedbutwilltakelongerto
dissolve.
• Do notusecalciumchlorideasasourceofsalt.Usesodiumchlorideonly.
• Do notuserocksaltbecauseinsolubleimpuritiesmixedwiththerocksaltcanshortenthelifeoftheunit.
CAUTION
Itisimportanttonotethatcertainmaterialsusedinandaroundswimmingpoolsandspasmaynotbecompatible
withchemicalscommonlyusedtopurifypoolandspawater(e.g.acids,chlorine,salt,stabilizers,etc.).

pooland/orspa,pleasediscussalloptionswithyourcontractortoassessthecompatibilityofsuchmaterialsand
chemicals.
Somehelpfulconsiderationsmayinclude:
•Choosingplantsthatcanwithstandsplashoutofpoolwatercontainingchlorineand/orsaltandotherwater
puricationchemicals.
•Allmetalcomponentsusedinandaroundapoolshouldbeofahighgrade,qualitystainlesssteel.
•Carefulselectionofmasonryproducts.Theporosityandhardnessofnaturalstonesvariesgreatly.Thereforewe
recommendyouconsultwithyourbuilderorstonecontractoronthebestchoiceforstonematerialsaroundyour
poolorspa.
•Sealingallmasonryproducts.Professionalsinthestoneindustryspecifythatevennaturalstone,especiallywhen
usedoutdoors,besealedtopreventweathering,staining,andprematuredegradation.Consultwithyourstoneor
deckcontractorforthepropersealerforthemasonryproductsyouhaveselectedtousearoundyourpoolorspa.
•Foroptimalresults,sealersshouldbereappliedonaregularbasis.Reapplytheprotectivesealeronaschedule
perthemanufacturer’sinstructions.
•Useofchemicalsotherthanthoserecommendedmaybehazardous.Followthechemicalmanufacturers
instructions.
