Operating the Unit
Warning
To avoid the risk of injury or death, always observe the following precautions
before initializing the unit:
• Never look into the end of an optical cable connected to an optical output
device that is operating. Laser radiation is invisible, and direct exposure can
severely injure the human eye or skin.
• To prevent potential fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to any
source of excessive moisture.
• Do not operate the unit when its covers or panels have been removed.
• Repairs are to be carried out only by a qualified professional.
• Operating the unit in the presence of flammable gases or fumes is extremely
hazardous.
• Do not perform any operating or maintenance procedure that is not
described in the user’s manual.
• Some of the unit’s capacitors can be charged even when the unit is not
connected to the power source.
Safety Features and Compliance
The MAP EDFA Cassette, installed as part of the MAP system, complies to CE requirements,
plus UL3101-1 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.1010.1. It is classified per Table 2. The following
safety features are incorporated in the design of the cassette:
• Laser output ports have shutters.
• The laser(s) does not activate unless commanded by host software.
• There is a LED on the EDFA cassette front panel indicating when the laser is on.
• The EDFA cassette shuts down to a safety interlock line from the host. Once the safety
interlock is replaced, there is a 3 second delay before the laser is re-activated.
Laser Safety Labelling
The MAP EDFA Cassette is classified per Table 2. As required by the FDA standard 21 CFR
1040.10, an identification label is placed on the side of the cassette, showing the name of
manufacturer, address, and the month and year of manufacture.
