HARD ERRORS
A hard error
indicates
one
of
two
possibilities.
Either physical damage has oc-
curred
to
the
disk
media,
or
a marginal
sector
has
finally
failed.
Any hard
disk
will
have a few marginal sectors, and the system is designed
to
accept
and work around a reasonable number
of
damaged sectors. Hard
disks
are designed
with
extra sectors
specifically
for
that
reason. Internal
logic
replaces damaged and failed sectors
with
one
of
the extra sectors.
Serious
problems are indicated
only
when there is a sudden increase in the
number of bad
sectors
reported by the CHECK program.
