Table 5-3 Hoist Inspection Methods and Criteria
Hooks - Bent Shank
or Neck
Shank and neck portions of hook should be free
of deformations
Should be free of significant rust, weld splatter,
nicks, gouges. Holes should not be elongated,
fasteners should not be loose, and there should
be no gap between mating parts.
Clean/Lubricate, or
replace as required.
Bearing parts and surfaces should not show
significant wear, and should be free of dirt, grime
and deformations. Hook should rotate freely with
no roughness.
Clean/lubricate, or
replace as required.
Hooks - Idle Sheave
and Axle (Bottom
Hook on Double Fall
Hoist)
Pockets of Idle Sheave should be free of
significant wear. Idle Sheave surfaces should be
free of nicks, gouges, dirt and grime. Bearing
parts and surfaces of Idle Sheave and Axle
should not show significant wear. Idle Sheave
should rotate freely with no roughness or
significant free play.
Clean/lubricate, or
replace as required.
Latch should not be deformed. Attachment of
latch to hook should not be loose. Latch spring
should not be missing and should not be weak.
Latch movement should not be stiff - when
depressed and released latch should snap
smartly to its closed position.
Load Chain -
Surface Condition
Should be free of rust, nicks, gouges, dents and
weld splatter. Links should not be deformed, and
should not show signs of abrasion. Surfaces
where links bear on one another should be free of
significant wear.
The “L” dimension should not be greater than
maximum value listed in Table 5-7.
Replace, inspect
Load Sheave (and
Idle Sheave for
double fall hoist).
Entire surface of each chain link should be coated
with lubricant and should be free of dirt and grime.
Chain should not emit cracking noise when
hoisting a load.
Clean/lubricate
(see Sections 6.0).
Chain should be reeved properly through Load
Sheave (and Idle Sheave for double fall hoist) -
refer to Section 3.12. Chain, limit locks and
stoppers should be installed properly - refer to
Section 7.3.2.
Reeve/Install chain
properly.
Chain springs should not be deformed or
compressed.
Should be free of significant deformation.
Chain Container
(optional)
Container should not be damaged. Brackets
should not be deformed or missing.
