UpdatingorrecoveringtheBIOS
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtoupdatetheBIOSandhowtorecoverfromaPOSTandBIOS
updatefailure.
LenovomightmakechangesandenhancementstotheBIOSandTSMfirmware.Whenupdatesarereleased,
theyareavailablefordownloadontheLenovoWebsiteathttp://www.lenovo.com/drivers.Youcanupdate
theserverfirmwarebydownloadinganupdatepackageandfollowingtheinstructionsontheWebpage.
Updating(flashing)theBIOS
Thistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtoupdate(flash)theBIOS.
Notes:
•UpdatetheBIOSonyourserveronlyifthenewerBIOSversionspecificallysolvesaproblemyouhave.
WedonotrecommendBIOSupdatesforserversthatdonotneedthem.Youcanviewtheupdated
informationforthenewBIOSversionintheinstallationinstructionsfortheBIOSupdateutilityprogram.
•DowngradingtheBIOStoanearlierversionisnotrecommendedandmightnotbesupported.Anearlier
BIOSversionmightnotsupportthelatestsystemconfigurations.
•IfthepowertoyourserverisinterruptedwhilethePOSTandBIOSarebeingupdated,yourservermight
notrestartcorrectly.EnsurethatyouperformtheBIOSupdateprocedureinanenvironmentwitha
steadypowersupply.Besides,ensurethatyourservercanrestartsuccessfullywithoutencountering
hardwareproblems.
•AfterupdatingtheBIOSfirmware,allofyourpreviousBIOSsettingswillbeautomaticallyrestored.Check
andreconfiguretheBIOSsettingsforyourspecificneeds.
Toupdate(flash)theBIOS,dothefollowing:
1.Gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/driversandfollowtheinstructionsontheWebpagetolocatetheBIOS
updatepackage.
2.DownloadtheBIOSupdatepackageandtheTXTfilethatcontainsinstallationinstructions.
3.PrinttheTXTfileandfollowtheinstructionstoupdate(flash)theBIOS.
4.CheckandreconfiguretheBIOSsettingsforyourspecificneedsbasedonyournoteorreferto“Using
theSetupUtilityprogram”onpage41aftertheBIOSupdateprocessiscompleted.
RecoveringfromaBIOSupdatefailure
IfthepowertoyourserverisinterruptedwhiletheBIOSisbeingupdated,yourservermightnotrestart
correctly.Ifthishappens,performthefollowingprocedurestorecoverfromtheBIOSupdatefailure.
Note:IftheoperatingsystemofyourserverisinstalledunderEFImode,youmustreinstalltheoperating
systemafterrecoveringtheBIOS.
TorecoverfromaBIOSupdatefailure,dooneofthefollowing:
•Usingtheautomaticrecoveryfeature
1.Reconnecttheservertoanacpowersource.
2.AfterthesystemhealthLEDturnsoff,pressthepowerbuttontoturnontheserver.Theserveris
turnedonandthenturnedoffautomatically.Then,therecoveryprocessstarts.Waitforabout20
minutesfortheTSMtorecovertheBIOS.Topreventpermanentdamage,DONOTTURNOFFTHE
SERVERduringtherecoveryprocess.Whentherecoveryprocessiscompleted,theserverturns
onautomatically.
