What to do if Mercury 2.8 EI 200 starter motor will not crank engine, or cranks slow?
    • D
      derek33Aug 7, 2025
If the starter motor of your Mercury Engine isn't cranking the engine or is cranking slowly, begin by ensuring the battery switch is turned on. Next, verify that the remote control is in the neutral position. Check for any open circuit breakers or blown fuses and reset or replace them as necessary. Inspect all electrical connections and wiring, especially the battery cables, for looseness, dirt, or damage; clean and tighten any faulty connections. Finally, test the battery and replace it if it's bad.

What to do if Mercury 2.8 EI 200 runs rough, misses and/or backfires?
    • M
      Marilyn CoffeyAug 12, 2025
If your Mercury Engine runs rough, misses, or backfires, start by checking the throttle linkages for any binding or obstructions. Next, inspect the idle speed and adjust if necessary. Replace any clogged fuel or air filters. If the fuel is stale or contaminated, drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. Address any kinked or clogged fuel lines or fuel tank vent lines by replacing the kinked lines or blowing out the lines with compressed air to remove obstructions. Purge the fuel injection system to remove any air. For an electronic fuel system fault, have it checked by an authorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel dealer / distributor.

      Matthew DillonAug 16, 2025
If the battery of your Mercury Engine isn't charging, first turn off any non-essential accessories to reduce the current draw. Check all electrical connections and wires, particularly the battery cables, for looseness, dirt, or damage; clean and tighten any faulty connections and repair or replace any damaged wiring. Inspect the alternator drive belt for looseness or poor condition, and replace or adjust it as needed. Finally, test the battery to assess its condition.

Why Mercury Engine has low engine oil pressure?
    • M
      Mr. Martin EdwardsAug 21, 2025
Low oil pressure in your Mercury Engine can stem from several causes. Check the oil level in the crankcase and add oil if it's insufficient. Conversely, excessive oil in the crankcase can also cause issues, so check and remove any excess, investigating the cause of overfilling. Diluted or oil with improper viscosity can also lead to low pressure; in this case, change the oil and filter, using the correct grade and viscosity, and determine what caused the dilution (such as excessive idling). For faulty senders, have the system checked by an authorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel dealer / distributor.

How to fix remote control that operates hard, binds, has excessive free-play, or makes unusual sounds on Mercury 2.8 EI 200?
    • B
      Barbara GravesAug 27, 2025
If the remote control on your Mercury Engine is hard to operate, binds, has excessive free-play, or makes unusual sounds, start by lubricating the shift and throttle linkage fasteners. Remove any obstructions in the shift or throttle linkages. Check all throttle linkages for looseness or missing parts. If any linkages are loose or missing, seek assistance from an authorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel dealer / distributor immediately. Straighten any kinked shift or throttle cables, or have the cable replaced by an authorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel dealer / distributor if it's damaged beyond repair. Have the shift cable adjustment checked by a professional. For Power Shift Assemblies, repair any cut, pinched, or kinked hoses or faulty shift cylinders.

Why Mercury 2.8 EI 200 Engine will not start, or is hard to start?
    • J
      jasoncolemanOct 31, 2025
Your Mercury Engine might fail to start, or prove difficult to start due to several reasons. It could be due to an activated lanyard stop switch, so check it first. Ensure you are following the correct starting procedure. Also, the fuel tank might be empty, or the fuel shut-off valve might be closed; in this case, fill the tank or open the valve. Other potential causes include a faulty mechanical fuel delivery pump, throttle malfunction, a faulty electrical stop-circuit, clogged fuel filters, stale or contaminated fuel, a kinked or clogged fuel/tank vent line, air in the fuel injection system, faulty wire connections, an inoperative glow plug system (if equipped), or an electronic fuel system fault. If fuel is present, have the pump replaced by an authorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel deale...
