General Maintenance Knife Babbitting
Knife Babbitt
Chipper knife Babbitting:
To maintain the proper distance between knife and anvil, it is important
that you babbitt your knives after each grinding.
To babbitt your knives, follow these steps:
1. Place knife in the fixture that is supplied with your machine so the
bevel edge of the knife is against the fixture.
Slide spacers into slots in your knife until they will not move any
more. (See inset.)
2. Warm knife and all babbitting hardware with a torch until all
moisture is eliminated from the surface of these parts.
3. After melting babbitt into funnel, place the babbitting funnel over
the cavity and slowly pour the babbitt from the ladle until the cavity
is filled.
4. Let babbitt cool. After babbitt is cool, remove the knife from the
babbitting fixture.
5. Place the knife on a table and file off the excess babbitt, until babbitt
does not project beyond the sides of the knife.
WARNING
Open flame can result in burns or serious injury.
Never babbitt a knife that measures less than 3 1/2
inches in width.
Always wear protective gloves and goggles while
babbitting the knives.
