TheGPSLocationServicefeatureusesinformationfromGlobalPositioningSystem(GPS)satellitesorbitingthe
Earthtodeterminetheapproximategeographicallocationofyourradio.
TheGPSLocationServiceavailability,accuracy,andthepositioncalculationtimevarydependingonthe
environmentinwhichyouusetheradio.TheGPSLocationServicecanassistyourdispatcherorcolleaguesinmany
wayssuchasmoreefcientdeploymentofresourcesorlocatingyourradiowhenyoutriggeryouremergencyservice.
Wherethesignalsfromsatellitesarenotavailable,theGPSLocationServicedoesnotwork.Thissituation
usuallyhappenswhenyourradiocannotestablishaviewofawideareaofopensky,forexample,when
yourGPSantennaiscoveredorfacingtheground.Suchsituationsincludebeing:
•Inundergroundlocations
•Insidebuildings,trains,orothercoveredvehicles
•Underanyothermetalorconcreterooforstructure
•Nearapowerfulradioortelevisiontower
•Inextremetemperatureoutsidetheoperatinglimitsofyourradio
Evenifyourlocationinformationcanbecalculatedinsuchsituations,itmaytakelongertodoso.Therefore,inany
emergencysituation,alwaysreportyourlocationtoyourdispatcher.Evenwhereadequatesignalsfrommultiple
satellitesareavailable,yourGPSLocationServicefeatureprovidesanapproximatelocation,within5–50meters
fromyouractuallocation.
TheradiocanbetriggeredtosendLocationReportsinvariouscircumstances,forexample:
•Uponarequest
•Triggeredbyspecicevents
•Atspeciedtimeintervals
•Atspecieddistanceintervals
TheLocationReportscanbesentintwowaysusing:
•SDS
•PacketData
IftheLocationReportsaresentoverthePacketData,anPacketDataicondisplayswhenthemessageisbeingsent.
