Ballastingthetractor
Forsufcienttractionandmaximumperformanceinheavydraftoperationsandtocounterbalancerear-mountedequip-
mentweightshouldbeaddedtothetractorintheformofcastironweightsorrearmountedballastbox.Onlyenough
weightshouldbeaddedtoprovidegoodtractionandstability.Addingmoreweightthanisneededresultsinunnec-
essarysoilcompactionincreasedrollingresistanceandhigherfuelconsumption.
NOTE:Whenaddingweighttothetractortirepressuresmayneedtobeincreased.See7-24inthismanual.
Frontendballastmayberequiredforstabilityandsteeringcontrolwhenweightistransferredfromthefrontwheels
totherearwheelsasanimplementisraisedbythetractorthree-pointhitch.
Usethefollowingasageneralguide:
•
Ballastthetractor(lessimplement)sothatapproximatelyone-thirdofthetractorweightisonthefrontwheels.For
optimumtractiontractorsequippedwith4WDshouldbeballastedsothat40–45%ofmachineweightisonthe
frontwheels.
•
Whenarearmountedimplementisraisedtothetransportpositionthefrontwheelreactionshouldbeatleast20%
oftractorweight.
•
Addadditionalfrontendballastasrequiredforstabilityduringoperationandtransport.Tractorfrontendballastmay
notalwaysmaintainsatisfactorystabilityifthetractorisoperatedathighspeedonroughterrain.Reducetractor
speedandexercisecautionundertheseconditions.

Whenusingfront-mountedequipmentaddweighttotherearaxletomaintaingoodtractionandstability.Front-
mountedequipmentvariesinweight.Refertoequipmentmanualforballasting.
Weightinglimitations
Theweightinglimitationsthatfollowarelimitationsonly.Theydonotimplythatthetractorshouldbeweightedtoattain
theweightsgiven.Useonlyenoughweighttoobtaingoodperformance.
