Mapping your Engine Using
NIRA rk
NIRA rk has two different modes; Standard and Advanced. The Standard
mode is sufficient to achieve excellent mapping results. The Advanced mode
gives access to a set of additional mapping parameters, which normally never
need to be adjusted.
6.1 Tables
Don’t set up too many RPM columns on the x-axes in the beginning.
Keeping the number low simplifies the calibration effort. It’s very easy to add
columns later if you need greater resolution. The same is true for the y-axes.
You can eliminate the impact of any row or column by setting its value to an
out-of-range value, e.g. 10,000 rpm or 0kPa.
The scale of the x and y axes is fully adjustable, which is a very powerful
feature. This lets you increase resolution significantly in sensitive areas by
adding more calibration points.
6.2 Calibrating Ignition
As described earlier, calibrating ignition is a delicate matter. A thorough
understanding of the engine’s allowed peak cylinder pressure, about knock
and about how ignition timing affects the combustion is crucial to achieve a
good ignition calibration. Delving into these matters is beyond the scope of
this handbook.
