CAUTION: Use extreme care when using a drift punch to
remove the packing gland. Make sure the packing gland does
not bind or score the high pressure sleeve walls.
9. Insert a long brass drift through the center of the lower packing
gland (7) until it contacts the upper packing gland (5). Strike the drift
punch with a hammer to drive the upper packing gland out of the high
pressure sleeve.
10. Place the high pressure sleeve right side up on the wood blocks and
insert the drift punch through the sleeve until it contacts the lower
packing gland. Strike the drift punch with a hammer to drive the lower
packing gland out of the high pressure sleeve.
Both the upper and lower packing glands should be replaced at the same
time. Only optional Type G packing glands can be rebuilt. Refer to the
Parts section for packing gland and kit part numbers.
Obsolete versions of the 16:1 and 27:1 stainless steel pumps use upper
packing glands with housings that are longer than those on the current
production models. An old style packing gland will not fit into a current
production model hydraulic section.
A new style packing gland will fit into an obsolete hydraulic section, but
the plunger motion will cause the glands to move up and down inside the
high pressure sleeve and cause leakage to occur where the solvent
chamber is secured to the high pressure housing.
Obsolete 16:1 and 27:1 pumps use lower packing gland housings that
have a larger diameter for the O-ring grooves than current versions.
Current packing glands will fit loosely into an obsolete pump siphon
housing and leak. Packing glands for obsolete pumps will not fit into
current siphon housings.
