Overview

This document describes the OMRON Body Composition Monitor HBF-255T, a device designed for home use to measure and display various body composition parameters. It is intended for adults who can understand the instruction manual and is not for professional use in hospitals or other medical facilities.

Function Description

The OMRON HBF-255T measures and displays the following parameters:

  • Body Weight: Your current weight.
  • Visceral Fat (up to 30 levels): The amount of fat surrounding your internal organs. High visceral fat levels are linked to increased levels of fat in the bloodstream and common diseases like hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Reducing visceral fat to an acceptable level is important for preventing or improving these conditions.
  • Resting Metabolism (in kcal): The minimum caloric intake required to sustain your body's everyday functions, indicating how many calories you need to ingest for energy.
  • Body Fat (in %): The percentage of body fat mass relative to your total body weight. The HBF-255T uses the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method to estimate this. Body fat is classified as visceral fat or subcutaneous fat depending on its distribution.
  • Skeletal Muscle (in %): The percentage of muscle attached to bones, which is used for body movement. Increasing skeletal muscle can help burn energy more easily and reduce the likelihood of turning to fat.
  • BMI (Body Mass Index): A ratio between weight and height, calculated using the formula: weight (kg) / height (m) / height (m). It helps indicate the likelihood of common diseases if the fat level is higher than international standards.
  • Body Age: An estimated age based on your resting metabolism and overall body composition profile (weight, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle percentage) compared to the average for your actual age. This serves as a guide to improve health conditions.

The device operates by sending a weak electrical current (50 kHz, less than 500 μA) through the body to determine fat tissue, which has low electrical conductivity. Muscles, blood vessels, and bones, with high water content, conduct electricity easily. The electrical impedance, along with user-registered height, weight, age, and gender, generates the body composition results.

Usage Features

The HBF-255T is designed for ease of use with several operational modes and features:

  • Personal Data Registration: Up to 4 persons can register their personal data (birth date, gender, height) directly on the unit or via the "OMRON connect" app. This data is essential for accurate body composition measurements.
  • Automatic Recognition: When a user steps onto the unit, it automatically powers on, recognizes the personal number, and starts the measurement.
  • Measurement Process:
    • Step onto the unit barefoot, placing the arches of your feet onto the center of the unit.
    • Stand with knees and back straight, keeping feet firmly placed on the electrodes without moving.
    • Ensure the unit is on a hard, level floor; cushioned surfaces can lead to inaccurate readings.
    • After measurement, results are displayed and rotate automatically.
    • Users can confirm their personal number and view results on the unit or a smart device.
  • "0 kg Correction" Function: The unit automatically corrects accuracy when not in use. If stored improperly (e.g., leaning against a wall, upside down, or with an object on it), this function may not work. In such cases, users must manually perform a "0 kg correction" by placing the unit on a hard, level floor, turning it on until "0.00 kg" is displayed, and then turning it off.
  • Viewing Measurement Results:
    • On the Unit: The unit stores up to 30 measurement results per user, but only the last result can be viewed directly. Older results are deleted when the memory exceeds 30 measurements.
    • On Smart Device: The HBF-255T can transmit measurement results to a smart device via the "OMRON connect" app (Bluetooth® low energy technology). This allows users to track weight and body composition changes over time.
  • Selecting Personal Number: If automatic recognition is inaccurate, users can manually select their personal number before measurement.
  • Guest Mode (Unrecorded Mode): This mode allows measurements without recording the results. Users must set birth date, gender, and height for each measurement in this mode.
  • Measure Weight Only: This mode allows users to measure only their body weight, and the result will not be recorded.
  • Weight Subtraction Function: This feature displays the difference between two body weight measurements, useful for measuring the weight of a baby or pet. These values are not recorded on the unit.
  • Changing or Deleting Personal Data: Users can modify or delete their registered personal data. Deleting personal data also deletes associated measurement results.
  • Deleting Communication Setting: Users can delete the communication settings from the unit if they no longer wish to use the "OMRON connect" app.
  • Power Management: The unit features a power touch button to turn it on/off and automatically turns off after 1 minute of inactivity during setup or after measurement.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the HBF-255T:

  • Battery Replacement: The unit uses 4 AAA alkaline batteries. A depleted battery symbol will appear on the display when replacement is needed. It's recommended to replace all four batteries with new ones of the same type simultaneously. Personal data is retained even after battery removal.
  • Cleaning:
    • Always keep the unit clean.
    • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a damp cloth moistened with mild detergent, then wipe dry.
    • Do not use benzene, thinner, or other volatile solvents.
    • Do not wash the unit with water.
  • Storage:
    • Store in a dry place, away from high temperatures, direct sunlight, dust, and vibrations.
    • Avoid storing in places with chemicals or corrosive gas.
    • Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period (approximately three months or more).
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common error displays (e.g., "Err1" for stepping off during measurement, "Err2" for incorrect posture, "Err5" for abnormal operation, "Err6" for communication failure) and other issues, along with recommended corrections.
  • Calibration: The product is calibrated at the time of manufacture. If accuracy is questioned, users should contact an authorized OMRON distributor.
