worksbyretardingenginespeedby
creatinghighexhaustbackpressure.
Thisbackpressureisobtainedby
restrictingairowthroughtheturbine
housingoftheturbocharger.This
restrictionthroughtheturbinehousing
iscreatedthroughpositioningofthe
slidingnozzle(1)locatedinternally
totheturbocharger.Thepositionof
theslidingnozzleiscontrolledby
theengineelectroniccontrolmodule
(ECM).Thisoptionmaynotbe
availableonyourvehicle.

Theexhaustbrakeisnotintended
astheprimarybrakeforthevehi-
cle,norisitanemergencybrake.
Theservicebrakesmustbeused
inanemergency.Relyingsolelyon
theexhaustbraketostoptheve-
hicleinanemergencycouldcause
anaccidentandleadtopersonal
injury.Theexhaustbrakeonly
helpstheservicebrakesbyusing
pressuretoslowthedrivetrain.
Youmustusetheservicebrakes
forquickoremergencystops.Fail-
uretocomplymayresultindeath,
personalinjury,equipmentorprop-
ertydamage.

DONOTusetheexhaustbrake
whenoperatingonsurfacewith
poortraction(suchaswet,icyor
snowcoveredroads).Retarders
cancausethewheelstoskidon
aslipperysurface.Youcouldlose
controlofthevehicleandjacknifeif
thewheelsbegintoskid,resulting
inanaccident.Failuretocom-
plymayresultindeath,personal
injury,equipmentorpropertydam-
age.
