Expected Result:
The status is “Low” when the jumper wire is not
connected. The status is OK” when the jumper wire
is connected.
Results:
OK The status is Low” when the jumper wire is
not connected. The status is “OK” when the jumper
wire i s conn
ected. The ECM is properly reading
the switch input.
Repair: Per
form the following procedure:
1. Remove the jumper wire from the ECM
connector
.
2. Install the two terminals into the correct
locations
on the ECM connector. Pull on the two
wires in order to verify proper installation of the
terminals.
The problem appears to be resolved. The
original problem was probably caused by a
poor elec
trical connection. Return the engine
to service.
STOP.
Not OK The status is “Low” when the jumper
wire is c
onnected. The ECM is not reading the
switch input.
Repair
: Temporarily install a new ECM. Refer
to electronic troubleshooting Troubleshooting,
“Replacing the ECM”.
If the new ECM works correctly, install the original
ECM and verify that the problem returns. If the new
ECM wo
rks correctly and the original ECM does
not work correctly, replace the original ECM. Verify

Data Link Circuit - Test
System Operation Description:
Use this procedure under the following
circumstances:
Use this procedure if the electronic service tool will
not communicate with the Electronic Control Module
(E
CM) through the data link.
The following background information is related
t
o this procedure:
The data link is the standard data link that is used by
the ECM in order
to communicate with the electronic
service tool.
The ECM provid
es multiple connections for the data
link. The technician must ensure that the correct
connector is being tested. The connection that is
used is depen
dent on the application.
If the diagnostic connector is on the engine, the
positive da
ta link signal will be from P2:21 to E-C3:D.
The negative data link signal will be from P2:20 to
E-C3:E.
If the diagnostic connector is off the engine, the
positive data link signal will be from E-C1:23 to
“E-C3:D” o
f the diagnostic connector. The negative
data link signal will be from E-C1:24 to “E-C3:E” of
the diagnostic connector .
The following information refers to the pin number.
Ensure that the correct connector is used.
Communication
The elect
ronic service tool may indicate the following
error message:
The v ers
ion of the ECM is not recognized and the
integrity of the changed parameters and displayed
data is not guaranteed.
This message will indicate that the version of the
software that is in the electronic service tool is not
the sam
e version of the software that is in the ECM.
Install the latest version of the electronic service tool
software in order to rectify the fault.
