Troubleshooting Section
Restriction in t he Coolant System
1. Visually inspect the cooling system for collapsed
hoses and/or other restrictions.
2. Clean the radiator and flush the radiator.
Water Temper
ature Regulator
Check the water temperature regulator for
correct ope
ration. If necessary, replace the water
temperature regulator.
Coolant Pum
p
1. Inspect the impeller of the coolant pump for
damage and
/or erosion.
2. Make sure that the drive gear is not loose on the
drive shaf
t of the coolant pump.
3. If necessary, replace the coolant pump.
Auxiliary Coolant Pump (if equipped)
1. Inspect
the impeller of the auxiliary coolant pump
for damage and/or erosion.
2. Make sur
e that the drive gear is not loose on the
drive shaft of the auxiliary coolant pump.
3. If nece
ssary, replace the auxiliary coolant pump.
Cylinder Head Gasket
Switch off the engine and allow the engine to cool
to below normal working temperature. Remove the
press
ure relief valve for the coolant system. Start
the engine and inspect the coolant for the presence
of bubbles. If bubbles are present in the coolant,
combu
stion gases may be entering the cooling
system. Check the cylinder head gasket. Refer
to the recommended action for the cylinder head
gask
et within Tr oubleshooting, “Coolant in Engine
Oil”. Check the cylinder head for flatness. Install the
pressure relief valve if there are no bubbles in the
cool
ant.

Recommended Actions
1. Verify that the correct passwords were entered.
Check every character in each password. Remove
the electri
cal power from the engine for 30
seconds and then retry.
2. Verify that
the electronic service tool is displaying
the “Factory Password” screen.
3. Use the ele
ctronic service tool to verify that the
following information has been entered correctly:

Serial number for the electronic control module

Serial number for the electronic service tool

Recommended Actions
1. Con
nect the electronic service tool to the
diagnostic connector. If the ECM does not
communicate with the electronic service tool, refer

correctly installed and undamaged. Refer
to Troubleshooting, “Electrical Connectors -
In
spect”.
