3.5. Hardware Installation
3.5.1. Installation of Extension Units (MultiHarp 160 only)
TheMultiHarp160ismodularbydesign.Uptothreeextensionunitscanbeaddedontopofthebaseunitinor-
dertoprovideupto64inputchannels.Theextensionunitsmustbestackedonthemainunitinascendingor-
der,i.e.firstX1,thenX2andfinallyX3.IfyouorderedyourMultiHarp160withmorethan16channelsthenitwill
beshippedwiththesuitablenumberofextensionunitsreadilymounted.Otherwise,ifyouorderedoneormore
extensionunitstoupgradeyourexistingsystem,thentheextensionunit(s)mustbemountedontopoftheexist-
ingunit(s).Inordertomakethestackruggedandsafetohandle,eachextensionunitmustbemechanicallyse-
curedbymeansoffourdedicatedconnectionpins(stainlesssteelwithrubberrings).Inordertodothis,please
proceedasfollows:
Onthetopmostunitofyourexistingstack
-removetheplasticscrewcoversfromthetopfourcornersofthehousing
-removethefourhorizontalscrews(hexkey)
-removethefourdummypins(stainlesssteel)fromthetopholesineachcorner
andreplacethemwiththeprovidedconnectionpins(stainlesssteelwithrubberrings)
-replacethefourhorizontalscrewsandcoverthemwiththeplasticscrewcovers
Fortheextensionunittobeadded
-removethehorizontalscrewsfromthefourbottomcornersofthehousing
-placetheexpansionunitontopoftheexistingstackyoupreparedbefore
(trytoavoidanytiltsothatthefourconnectionpinscanslideinstraight)
-replacethehorizontalscrewsandre-installtheplasticcovers
Whenthemechanicalinstallationiscompleteyoucanconnecttheunitsattherearusingtheprovidedground
anddatacables.ThedataconnectorsarelabeledE1,E2,andE3onthebaseunitandjustEontheextension
units(Seesection8.3.2.)Eachextensionunitshipswithadedicateddatacable(SamtecEPLSP)foritsconnec-
tiontothebaseunit.Thedatacables(orange)mustbepluggedinstartingatconnectorE1forthefirstextension
unit(shortestcable),continuinguptoE3forthelastextensionunit(longestcable).Other(cross-)connections
arenotallowed.Seesection8.3.2.forapictureofthecorrectcabling.Ifthemaximumof3extensionunitsisnot
exhaustedthenthecorrespondingsocketsremainunconnected.Thegroundcablesmustbescrewedontothe
groundingterminalsformingachainacrosstheentirestackofunits.Thisismandatory.Optionallyyoucanuse
thefreegroundterminalonthebaseunittomakeaconnectiontothegroundinglineofyourlab(askanelectri-
cianwhenindoubtwhatandwherethisis).Thisgroundingisnotnecessaryforelectricalsafety,however,itmay
insomesituationshelptoreducenoisepickup.Thisconnectionmustbelessthan3mlong,ideallyasshortas
possible.
Note:Theconnectionsbetweenthebaseunitandtheextensionsmustbemadebeforethedeviceisswitched
onandmustnotbeconnectedordisconnectedwhilethedeviceispoweredon.
3.5.2. Electrical Connection (all MultiHarp Models)
Makesuretop electrostatic dischargewhenunpackingandhandlingyourMultiHarp,especiallywhenconnect-
ingcables.NotethatPMTdetectorsoperatewithhighvoltagethatmaydischargethroughthesignalcable.
Makesuresuchdetectorsareswitchedoffandfullydischargedbeforeconnectingthem.
AllexceptoneofthevariousMultiHarphardwaremodelsreceivetheirpowerdirectlyfromaregular100...240V
ACline.ThecorrespondingIECsocketatthebackofthehousingalsoholdsthepowerswitchandtwofuses.
TheexceptionisthehardwaremodelMultiHarp1504PEPS,whereEPSstandsforexternalpowersupply.In
thiscasepowerissuppliedthroughacoaxialconnectorlabeled‘12VDC’towhichthededicatedpowersupply
unitmustbeconnected.ThelattermustbeconnectedtotheACpowerlinethroughitscorrespondingstandard
plug.TheMultiHarphasnodedicatedpowerindicator,however,oncepowerisconnectedandswitchedonyou
shouldseethethreestatusLEDsatthefrontlightup.Seesection8.3.5fortheirinterpretation.
Alsoatthebackofthehousingthereisa groundingterminalthatcanbeusedtomakeaconnectiontothe
groundinglineofyourlab.Askaqualifiedelectricianwhenindoubtwhatandwherethisis.Thisgroundingisnot
necessaryforelectricalsafety,however,itmayinsomesituationshelptoreducenoisepickup.Inordertobeef-
fectivethegroundingshouldbeoflowimpedance,i.e.usingthickwires,lessthan3mlong,ideallyasshortas
possible.
