CHAPTER 7
Steering
Non-electronic steering vessels feature a rack or rotary style steering
system featuring a cable that functions with assistance through the
engine power steering pump. As you turn the wheel force is applied
through the system to a hydraulic cylinder found at the aft end of the
engine and attached through the engine power steering pump hoses.
With the engine running, check the engine power steering pump
level before each outing. Add the appropriate power steering fl uid.
Periodically inspect the entire steering system for tightness and signs
of wear and leaks including the steering wheel. Lubricate the steering
shaft at the engine. Refer to the manufacturer’s engine manual in the
owner’s pouch for additional information along with the maintenance
chart in this chapter.
