Do you have a question about the Storz S-PILOT and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The KARL STORZ S-PILOT® is a tube squeeze valve with an integrated SCB module, designed for regulating fluid suction during diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. It can be operated directly via a footswitch or a switch on the device, or indirectly via a connected device.

Function Description

The S-PILOT®'s primary function is to clamp or release a suction tube connected to a vacuum reservoir. This vacuum can be generated by a suction pump or the hospital's central vacuum supply.

  • Direct Operation: When a footswitch is connected to the S-PILOT®'s socket and activated, the valve opens. The valve closes when the activation signal stops. Alternatively, the tube squeeze valve can be opened and closed using the switch on the S-PILOT® itself, which is useful for unsterile OR staff.
  • Indirect Operation: The S-PILOT® can be activated by another device connected either through its footswitch socket, the KARL STORZ SCB interface, or a connecting cable.

Usage Features

  • Automatic Smoke Evacuation: When combined with compatible High-Frequency (HF) surgical units (e.g., KARL STORZ AUTOCON® III 400, COVIDIEN Force Triad, ConMed System 5000), the S-PILOT® automatically opens its tube squeeze valve when the HF surgical unit is activated. This allows for the suctioning of smoke gas, improving visibility at the operation site. The valve closes after a 3-second delay once the HF signal stops.
  • Fluid Suction with UNIDRIVE® S III: In combination with the UNIDRIVE® S III motor system, the S-PILOT® facilitates fluid suction from shaver attachments. A signal from the footswitch (connected to UNIDRIVE® S III via control cable 27610070) controls the valve. Setting the footswitch to the first stage opens the S-PILOT® valve for vacuum suction. The second stage activates the motor system in addition, allowing for the suctioning of tissue fragments and irrigant solution.
  • Fluid Suction with CALCUSON: When used with the CALCUSON ultrasonic generator, the S-PILOT® enables fluid suction. The footswitch signal (transmitted from CALCUSON via control cable 27610070) controls the S-PILOT®. The first footswitch stage opens the valve for vacuum suction, while the second stage activates the CALCUSON, allowing for the suctioning of stone fragments and irrigant solution.
  • Tube Set Insertion: To insert the tube set, the tube squeeze valve switch is pressed to open the valve. The tube set is then fully inserted, ensuring it is not leaking or kinked. The white end of the tube set connects to the suction receptacle/system. Any unused Y-adaptor tube ends must be closed. The suction flow can be adjusted via a roller clamp to prevent cavity collapse. Fluid and smoke gas can be suctioned simultaneously via the Y-adaptor.
  • Acoustic Signals:
    • Availability Signal: Sounds after a successful self-test upon power-up, modulated at 1.5 Hz by ± 2 Hz, with 5 different harmonics.
    • Information Signal: Modulated at 1.5 Hz by ± 2 Hz, with 5 different harmonics, occurring once for safety state indications and repeating every 15 seconds.
  • Self-test: Upon power-up, the device performs a self-test, checking the tube squeeze valve. A negative self-test results in a flashing power switch LED and an alarm signal.
  • Motor Current Monitoring: The motor drive control includes temperature and current monitoring, switching off the motor if it overheats or overloads.

Electromagnetic Compatibility

The S-PILOT® is designed for professional healthcare settings and residential environments (CISPR 11 Class B). It offers adequate protection against radio communication interference. Special precautions are necessary when used near devices emitting electromagnetic radiation (e.g., MRT, CT, diathermy, electrocautery, RFID). Recommended separation distances from portable and mobile HF communications devices are provided in the manual to prevent interference.
