DSC Q Series Getting Started Guide

4. Place the Finned Cooler over the cell and align the notch in
the plate with the alignment pin as seen in the figure to the
right.
5. Obtain a long 5/32-inch hexagonal (Allen) wrench from the
accessory kit.
6. Insert the tip of the wrench into any one of the three captive
screws in the FACS plate while holding onto the cooler. (See
the figure below.) You will need to exert downward pressure
on the wrench while you tighten the screw a few turns. DO
NOT fully tighten yet.
7. Repeat step 6 for the two
remaining captive
screws. After you have
started each screw, go
back and tighten down
all three screws until you
feel them touch the bot-
tom. Do not over tighten.
8. Slide the cover back over the cell and replace the screws removed
originally. Push the plug back into place on the side of the cover.
9. Select the correct cooler type on the Instrument Preferences/Cooler Page
of the DSC instrument control software.
You are now ready to use the Finned Air Cooling System. (This cooler
requires a pressurized air source connected to the Cooling Gas fitting.)
Installing the Quench Coolers
Installing a quench cooler is slightly different depending on whether you are using the "stand-alone" variety or
the type to be used with the Finned Air Cooling System (FACS). See the instructions below that apply to the
desired type of quench cooler.
Quench Cool Accessory for FACS
The FACS quench cooler is used to expedite the process of returning the cell
to ambient temperature at the end of a run. (This quench cooler is not intended
to perform subambient experiments.) The following instructions are written
on the assumption that the Finned Air Cooling System is already installed.
(Follow the directions beginning on page 38 if you need to install the FACS
first.)
1. Remove the lid(s). If you do not have an AutoLid on your instrument,
manually remove the lids. If your instrument has an AutoLid, select the
Control/Lid/Open function to raise the Autolid from the cell and cause
it to move out of the way.
2. Slide the cooler into place into the top of the Finned Air Cooling System
(FACS) using gloves to handle it, if you have already poured liquid
nitrogen into it as shown in the figure here.
