Troubleshooting guide
Before requesting service for this unit, check the chart below for a
possible cause of the problem you are experiencing. Some simple
checks or a minor adjustment on your part may eliminate the prob¬
lem and restore proper operation.

Problem I Probable cause(s)
if you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the reme¬
dies indicated in the chart do not soive the problem, refer to the
directory of Authorized Service Centers (enclosed with this unit) to
locate a convenient service center, or consult your dealer for
instructions.
Tape moves but no sound
is heard.
Distorted sound.
Previously recorded sound
has not been erased.
Sound output is hoarse or
unsteady.
Poor sound quality (espe¬
cially in the high treble and
low bass ranges).
Sound is low, poor tone,
intermittent sound, noise.
There is a lot of noise, and
the treble is drowned out.
A “hum” noise is heard dur¬
ing tape playback or record¬
ing.
Recording is not possible.
TV noise is accidentally
recorded.
I The volume control of the amplifier or receiver is
set to its minimum position.
The input selector of the amplifier or receiver is not

Suggested remedy
• Adjust the volume control to the desired level.
• Set to the "TAPE” position.
• Select the appropriate recording level.
• Clean the head. m

; • Test with another tape. Discard the damaged tape
| if there is no problem with the test tape.
The correct Dolby noise-reduction mode is not set. i • Set to the correct mode. (0, Q)
Heads, capstan and/or pinch roller are dirty or
tape is damaged.
The heads have been magnetized.
This unit is placed too close to a receiver, amplifier
or tuner.
[REC REVEL] is at the “O" position.
One of the tape-to-tape recording-speed indicators
(“XT’ or “| X2P's illuminated.
This unit is near a TV.
• Clean the heads, capstan and/or pinch roller, or try
a new cassette. (©>
• Demagnetize the heads with a commercially sold
magnetic eraser.
• Leave as much space as possible between the
units, or place them where there is the least
amount of “hum”.
• Select the appropriate recording level. (0)
• Switch OFF whichever tape-to-tape recording
speed indicator is illuminated (by pressing
[SPEED]). (0)
• Try placing this unit further away from a TV.
