Procedure for Steering Cylinder Internal Leakage
Test:
1. Make sure hydraulic oil is at normal operating tem-
perature.
2. Park machine on a level surface with the cutting
deckslowered andPTOswitch off.Makesureengine is
off. Apply the parking brake.
3. Read Precautions For Hydraulic Testing.
CAUTION
Beforeopeninghydraulicsystem,operateallhy-
draulic controls to relieve system pressure and
avoid injury from pressurized hydraulic oil. See
RelievingHydraulicSystemPressurein theGen-
eral Information section of this chapter.
4. Turnthesteeringwheelforarightturn(clockwise)so
the steering cylinder rod is fully extended.
5. Thoroughlycleantheareaaroundthehydraulichose

6. Place a drain pan under the steering cylinder. Re-
movehydraulichosefromthefittingontherodendofthe
steering cylinder. Cap the end of the hose.
7. Remove all hydraulic oil from drain pan. Make sure
that empty drain pan remains under the open fitting of
the steering cylinder.
8. With the engine off, continue turning the steering
wheelfor a rightturn (clockwise)with the steeringcylin-
derfullyextended.Observetheopenfittingonthesteer-

ing Cylinder Service inthe Service and Repairs section
of this chapter).Checkdrain pan for any evidence of oil
that would indicate internal cylinder leakage.
9. Removeplugfromthehydraulichose.Connecthose

tested acceptably, the steering control v alve requires
service (see Steering Control Valve and Steering Con-
trol Valve Service in the Service and Repairs section of
this chapter).
11.Check oil level in hydraulic reservoir and adjust if
needed.
