Since a
sudden
increase in load
greatly
increases
the
risk
of
knock,
the
control
un
it
in
corpo
rates a
fun
ction
which
re-
tards
the
tim
ing
sharply
for a
brief
period
u
nder
these
condit
ions.
The
fun
c
tion
of
load
-
controlled
ret
ardation
is
to
re-
duce
th
e li
ke
lih
ood
of knock
when
the
accelerator is
suddenly
depressed.

ite
to
the
occurrence
of
the
more

mon

k. Thus,
for

le,

the accelerator is s

of its
design)
to
retard the
ignition
quick
ly
enough
by
an
amount
equiva
lent
to
the

oad
increase.
For this reason, certain cars
may
be
subject
to
what
is
known
as
'
transitional
' knock
if
driven
in
too
high
a
gear
with
the
accelerat
or
to
the
fl oor.
