LLDPIntroduction
WiththewideapplicationsofEthernetonLANandMetropolitanAreaNetwork(MAN),
usershavehigherandhigherrequirementsforEthernetmanagementability.Atpresent,
manynetworkmanagementsystemsusetheautomaticdiscoveryfunctiontotracethe
topologychanges.However,mostnetworkmanagementsystemscanonlyanalyzethe
networktopologyuptothenetworklayer.Theinformation,suchastheinterfacesona
device,theinterfacesconnectedtootherdevices,andthepathsamongclients,network
devicesandservers,needtobecollectedthroughthelinklayer.Withenoughdetailed
information,userscanlocatenetworkfaultscorrectly.
LinkLayerDiscoveryProtocol(LLDP)isaprotocoldenedbyIEEE802.1AB.Network
managementsystemscanknowthetopologyandchangesofL2networksthroughLLDP .
LLDPorganizeslocaldeviceinformationintoType/Length/Value(TLV)andencapsulates
itinaLinkLayerDiscoveryProtocolDataUnit(LLDPDU)tosendittothedirect-connected
neighbor.Atthesametime,LLDPsavestheLLDPPDUsentbyneighborsinthestandard
MIB,sothatnetworkmanagementsystemscanqueryanddeterminethecommunication
statesoflinks.
LLDPFeatures
LLDPisdenedin802.1AB.AsshowninFigure14-1,LLDPworksatthedatalinklayer.
ItisaneighbordiscoveryprotocolthatdenesastandardforEthernetdevices(suchas
switches,routersandwirelessLANaccesspoints).ThroughLLDP ,anEthernetdevice
canadvertiseitsexistencetoothernodesonthenetworkandsavediscoveryinformation
ofneighbordevices.Thedevicesendsthestateinformationtootherdevices.The
informationisstoredoneachportofalldevices.Ifnecessary,thedevicecansendupdate
informationtotheneighbordevicesthatareconnecteddirectly,andtheneighbordevices
storetheinformationinstandardSNMPMIBs.
