5 About Methods, Sequences, and Data Analysis
What Is a Method?
A method is the group of settings required to accurately
analyze a specific sample.
Since every type of sample reacts differently in the GC—some
samples require a higher oven temperature, others require a
lower gas pressure or a different detector—a unique method
must be created for each specific type of analysis.
What Is Saved in a Method?
Some of the settings saved in a method define how the
sample will be processed when the method is used.
Examples of method settings include:
The oven temperature program required
The type of carrier gas required
The type of detector to be used
The type of inlet to be used
The type of column to be used
The length of time to process a sample
Data analysis and reporting parameters are also stored in a
method when it is created on an Agilent data system, for
example EZChrom Elite Compact. These parameters describe
how to interpret the chromatogram generated by the sample
and what type of report to print.
See the Advanced User Guide for more details on what can
be included in a method.
